GINEBRA, AIR21 MAKE COMMCUP DEBUT

Air21 and Ginebra open up their Commissioner’s Cup campaigns against each other as the last two teams to play this conference. One team made some big changes in the break while the other stayed put. Which will work better?

Ginebra made a trade and changed head coaches in between conferences. Adding Mac Baracael for Allein Maliksi and giving Coach Alfrancis Chua the steering wheel to the team, the Kings are looking for a fresh start. It is not going to be an easy conference for them, but an opening game against Air21 is a good way to see how it could all play out.

The Express were on the verge of adding Joseph Yeo and Ronjay Buenafe to their line-up, but those deals fell through. So here they are with the same exact team they had in the last conference, but will have the services of Michael Dunigan as their import. Will he be a game changer? Will KG Canaleta’s experience with SMART-Gilas make him better? Will Coach Franz bring back the bigote?


WHAT TO WATCH

How awkward that bench is going to be.

With new head coach Alfrancis Chua at the helm and former head coach Siot Tanquingcen sitting beside him as AFC’s assistant, things could get a little awkward. With all of these questions on how the dynamic of the team will be, we are going to finally see it in front of our very eyes.

Will Chualay be exactly what Ginebra needs to get back into domination mode with some run-and-gun basketball? Or will there be a little power struggle at the top that will put everything into more of a funk?

I wonder if the bench will look like a barkada after a couple breaks up, but still hang out together. La lang.


WHO TO WATCH

Herbert Hill.

Sorry Air21 fans if this is another Ginebra thing to keep your eye on during the game, but it has to go to Herbert. We all need to see if this guy has what it takes to last longer than Sunday. The leash is very short on Hill being that he is not Coach Chua’s pick as import, but it was decided on when Coach Siot was still there.

If this dude comes in and drops 35 points, 18 rebounds, 4 blocks on 15/20 shooting in a winning effort, he could last longer than expected. If he gives the Gin Kings 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and finishes Rico Maierhoffer’s packed lunch, there is going to be a problem. I know how much Rico loves his food.
