Guiao: We’re underdogs
YENG Guiao is one coach who loves challenges.
Against Barangay Ginebra in the quarterfinal series, the multi-titled mentor and his embattled Rain or Shine Elasto Painters will be looking for a breakout performance that will probably define their campaign in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup.
“That’s what I’m always telling my team. This series against Ginebra may be the breakout we’ve been looking for and that breakout will push us farther. I think it’s about time for us to enter the semis and we like our chances against Ginebra,” said Guiao.
The fiery mentor, however, admitted his team will be the underdogs against a more experienced squad, which remains the league’s crowd favorite.
But the many-time PBA champion mentor and former national team coach is unperturbed.
“Definitely, we’re the underdogs. We’ve only just started playing together in the playoffs while Ginebra is already an experienced team,” added Guiao. “Everything works on favor of Ginebra—from experience, crowd advantage and even the referees. Borderline calls could go in their favor a lot of times.”
“But I always like to relish the role of playing as an underdog. It doesn’t only brings out the best in me, but it also brings out the best in anyone.”
The Elasto Painters arranged a quarterfinals showdown with the Gin Kings after defeating the Alaska Aces, 91-85, on Sunday.
Guiao is hoping that the energy showed by his players in posting back-to-back wins will be carried over against the Gin Kings. Rey Joble
