After Jaworski
A look at Ginebra's coaching history after Robert Jaworski
1998
Running for Senate
After piloting Gordon's Gin to the Commissioner's Cup title in 1997, playing coach Robert Jaworski takes a leave of absence at the helm of the squad to run for the Senate. Longtime assistant Rino Salazar takes over in an interim capacity.
1999
Resignation Trigger
Sharpshooter Allan Caidic is traded to Ginebra and is appointed playing assistant coach, a move that does not sit well with Jaworski. Caidic is a known disciple of then-San Miguel coach Ron Jacobs. Jaworski formally quits the Ginebra coaching job.
October 1999
Inauspicious Debut
Allan Caidic takes over as Ginebra coach after the abrupt resignation of Rino Salazar. The Gin Kings go 1-7 in the Governors' Cup, Caidic's first tournament as coach.
May 2001
Cinderella Run
With ample support from coaching consultant Ron Jacobs and superb performances from stars Jun Limpot, Vergel Meneses, and a rookie sensation named Mark Caguioa, Allan Caidic leads Ginebra to the finals of the All-Filipino Cup, losing in six games to San Miguel.
2002
Interim Coach
Allan Caidic is appointed an assistant to the national team, leaving Cris Calilan in charge of Ginebra on an interim basis.
March 2004
Siot In, Allan Out
After several years of middling performances for Ginebra, Allan Caidic is relieved of his coaching duties. Former San Miguel assistant Siot Tanquingcen is appointed coach of the Gin Kings.
February 2005
Back-to-Back, Baby!
Siot Tanquingcen leads Ginebra to back-to-back titles in the 2004 Fiesta Conference and the 2004-05 Philippine Cup. He becomes the first coach to lead the franchise to a title since the departure of Robert Jaworski.
August 2006
Coaching Rigodon
Despite his success at Ginebra, Siot Tanquingcen is demoted to assistant to pave way for the entry off Jong Uichico as a result of a coaching rigodon at San Miguel Corporation. Chot Reyes is appointed coach of San Miguel, taking Uichico's spot.
February 2007
Instant Championship
Led by the electric guard duo of Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand, Ginebra wins a title in Jong Uichico's very first conference as coach in the 2006-07 Philippine Cup, defeating San Miguel. Siot Tanquingcen moves to San Miguel after the conference to take over for Chot Reyes, who leaves to coach the national team.
August 2008
The Last Title
Bannered by prolific import Chris Alexander, Ginebra wins its second title underJong Uichico in the 2008 Fiesta Conference. Ginebra has not won another championship since.
August 2010
Siot Returns
After three years at the helm of San Miguel Beer, Siot Tanquingcen is replaced by Ato Agustin. Tanquingcen moves back to Ginebra to serve as an assistant to Jong Uichico once more.
August 2011
''Co-Coaches'
Despite leading Ginebra to two more finals appearances, Jong Uichico is demoted to "co-coach" by Ginebra management along with Siot Tanquingcen. Later, upon his departure from the team, Uichico confirms that Tanquingcen actually was head coach of the squad.
February 2012
Coaching Consultant
With Jong Uichico's departure, Ginebra hires Alfrancis Chua to be a coaching consultant for the team.
2013
Demoted Again
After Siot Tanquingcen fails to duplicate his initial success at the helm of Ginebra, management announces the move to demote him in favor of Alfrancis Chua.
The huge shadow of Robert Jaworski will perhaps loom forever over the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coaching job. Every coach who will man the sidelines for the league’s crowd darlings will draw inevitable — and perhaps unfair — comparisons to the Living Legend. With Alfrancis Chua’s appointment as the Gin Kings’ latest coach, here’s a look back at the men who have attempted to fill in Jaworski’s shoes.
