Chua to coach Kings

Ginebra San Miguel consultant Al Francis Chua is likely to be elevated to head coach, replacing Siot Tanquingcen.

The Manila Standard learned that the appointment of Chua would be announced at the beginning of the new year.

Chua, who once played in the amateur leagues for coach Joe Lipa, regarded as one of his mentors, is bound to bring a much-needed aggressive style to the PBA’s crowd favorites, who were a major disappointment in the on-going Philippine Cup, having been eliminated in the quarterfinals by Rain or Shine.

The charismatic, pony-tailed Chua is noted for his intensity and is expected to re-assess the Ginebra line-up and seek to strengthen it for the succeeding conferences in the 2012-2013 PBA season.

To the chagrin of many Ginebra fans, Tangquincen traded such talented players as point guard Mike Cortez and high-flyers Ronald Tubid and JC Intal and sent power forward Erik Menk to the Asean Basketball League despite the absence of solid big men in the Ginebra line-up.

Why do I have this feeling that Al Chua will also be unsuccessful as a GSM head coach? Maybe because of his PBA coaching history? He failed to give Tanduay and Sta. Lucia franchise a championship title even with the powerhouse line-up. But I hope I'm wrong.

I wish siya ang magaalis malas sa Ginebra and won his first Championship sa Ginebra!
