HATFIELD DEFENSIVE GEM GIVES GINEBRA NEW LEASE ON LIFE
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, leaning on Rudy Hatfield’s defensive heroics in the endgame, edged Rain or Shine Friday, 79-77, earning a new lease on life in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Hatfield intercepted a Gabe Norwood throw-in intended for Jervy Cruz with 2.4 seconds remaining to preserve the Kings’ two-point margin and tie the best-of-three quarterfinal series at one game apiece.
Game 3 will be played on Sunday at 5 p.m. with the winner facing early qualifier San Mig Coffee in the best-of-seven semifinals.
Prior to Hatfield’s defensive gem, the Elasto Painters came back from a 72-79 deficit in the last two minutes to come to within two after a Paul Lee three-pointer.
Chris Ellis led Ginebra with 18 points and 10 rebounds, with Mark Caguioa recording 17 points.
