Coach Siot cautious about Ginebra’s strategy
SIOT TANQUINGCEN isn’t looking far ahead.
After nailing the team’s third straight win on Sunday against Alaska, the temperamental Barangay Ginebra San Miguel head coach said their focus is their next assignment and not their remaining four matches.
“It’s a cliché as it may seem, laro lang kami ng laro. We have to keep on playing every
quarter, every game,” said Tanquingcen minutes after their 96-93 escape against the Aces at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday night.
It was Ginebra’s third consecutive win after losing five straight to go even at 5-5 won-lost.
The Kings are in solo fifth, three games behind league-leader Talk ’N Text (8-2).
And with four games left, Ginebra can still vie for one of the two automatic semifinal seats—although Tanquingcen wants his players to focus on the immediate task on hand.
“We just have to go at it,” said Tanquingcen of the victory against Rain or Shine on November 25.
Playmaker LA Tenorio observed that they stopped their five-game losing streak and went on to win three straight because they are communicating better with each other
this time.
“It boils down sa pagkakakilala ng mga players. Communication ang importante,” said Tenorio, who was recruited this year in a trade. “Kailangan namin matutunan ’yun [communication].”
Like Tanquingcen, Tenorio said their immediate goal is to climb higher in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup, which is now approaching its crucial stretch.
“Noong natalo kamin ng five straight, pinag-usapan namin na kunin lang ng one game at a time,” said Tenorio, who scored 10 points against his former team. “Nagkataon lang na Alaska ang nakalaban namin. But our goal really is to move to .500.”
After the Elasto Painters, the Kings will face Air21 on November 30, Barako Bull on December 2 and the Tropang Texters on the final day of the eliminations on December 9.
