MANILA, Philippines - The Barangay Ginebra Kings and the Barako Bull Energy play each other tonight in hopes of avoiding a quarterfinals date with the number 2 seed in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The Kings are currently in fifth place in the league standings with two games to go in their schedule. A win over Barako tonight will ensure that Ginebra will be among the teams playing in a best-of-3 quarterfinals.
But Barako is likewise motivated as they are looking to avoid being pitted against a squad with a twice-to-beat advantage.
"We have to come into the game with a playoff mentality," Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen told PBA.ph.
The Kings are coming off a historic 800th franchise win after defeating Meralco, 81-71, last weekend. But Tanquingcen said their mission was not yet over.
"We still have to keep on fighting and keep on climbing," he said. "Kailangang maiwasan namin lumaban against a team with a twice-to-beat advantage. Mabigat 'yon."
Barako is mired at 7th place, but a win over Ginebra keeps them in the hunt for a best-of-3 quarterfinals.
