Ginebra going for less predictable attack
Coming into the season, Mark Caguioa and LA Tenorio were undoubtedly the main men for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
But with the Gin Kings sputtering with a five-game losing streak, coach Siot Tanquingcen is looking for ways to make their attack less predictable.
“We want to involve everyone. Gusto naming mapadali yung trabaho ng mga main men namin like Mark Caguioa and LA Tenorio,” said Tanquingcen, who piloted Ginebra to victory Friday against GlobalPort to snap the team’s skid.
“Everybody knows they’re our main men, but a lot of players have to step up.”
Elmer Espiritu, acquired from Air 21 prior to the season, played his best game in a Ginebra uniform, contributing 12 points. He was the most consistent frontliner for the Gin Kings against the Batang Pier.
Tenorio, who also played with Espiritu at Alaska, wasn’t surprised by the performance.
“He’s been practicing so well, so it’s about time for him to step up,” said the point guard.
“Gusto naming ma-involve yung mga teammates namin dahil mas gusto naming maging unpredictable yung takbo ng team namin.”
Veterans Willie Wilson and Jayjay Helterbrand came off the bench and combined for 17 points.
The 2009 Most Valuable Player, Helterbrand played 29 minutes, his most this season.
“Kapag mayroong na-ti-trade, someone has to step up and Jayjay showed it tonight. Nakikita ko ginagawa niya sa ensayo nagpapakundisyon talaga siya,” said Tenorio.
