After five straight setbacks, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel players are frustrated by the team’s performance.
“It’s not only frustrating that we’ve lost five straight, but what’s frustrating was we haven’t won a game in a month,” veteran center Billy Mamaril told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “But despite these frustrating experiences, we’re still looking what is still out there for us and we’re trying to make the playoffs.”
Point guard Jayjay Helterbrand said he expected Ginebra to struggle with many new faces in the team.
“This is an entirely new Ginebra team. The only original members that won championships for this team were me, Mark, Billy and Rudy [Hatfield],” said Helterbrand. “I’m frustrated, but I’m still optimistic of our chances.”
Helterbrand pointed to Ginebra’s last title run in 2008, when the team opened the tournament with five straight losses.
“We won a championship when we were 0-5, so we have to stay upbeat.”
Everyone on the Gin Kings side seem to be searching for answers to the team’s slump.
“We’ve been trying to figure out what went wrong and we were searching for answers, but we couldn’t find one,” said rookie forward Keith Jensen.
“This is frustrating, big time.”
Mike Cortez, who was relegated to backup point guard duties following the acquisition of LA Tenorio in the offseason, said more time was needed to see results.
“We’re a talented team, but obviously chemistry wasn’t there,” said Cortez. “But this is a new team and the only way these new guys could learn is to give them exposure.”
