Ginebra dispatches Meralco to stay in hunt for 2nd spot

Barangay Ginebra notched the franchise’s 800th win with a methodical 81-71 demolition of Meralco to stay in the race for the No. 2 spot in the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

In holding the Bolts to their lowest output in the tournament, the Gin Kings stretched their winning streak to three games and upped their win-loss slate to 7-5.

Meralco finished its elimination phase with an 8-6 mark, still the best for the young franchise in any conference since entering the league last season.

Mike Cortez led Ginebra with 14 points and 9 rebounds while Ronald Tubid and Mark Caguioa each had 13 points. Rico Villanueva also had a decent performance with 11 points.

“Hindi pa tapos ang mission namin. We have to stay focused,” said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen.

“Players should remain focused at dapat gutom para ma-maintain namin yung energy in our last two games.”

Ginebra will play Barako Bull on Thursday and Talk ‘N Text at the end of the eliminations on December 11.

Sol Mercado and Mark Cardona combined for 38 points for Meralco but the rest of their teammates failed to deliver.

After trailing by 11 points in the first half, the Bolts behind Cardona and Mercado were able to get closer at 66-64. But Villanueva completed a three-point off the final foul of Asi Taulava that sparked a decisive 12-2 assault to push the Ginebra lead back to 78-66 with 3:31 remaining.

Meralco never got closer than eight points, 79-71, before Tubid pegged the final score with a lay-up.

The Kings actually have a shot for the twice-to-beat advantage that comes with a top-two finish, but it depends on how the other contenders fare in their remaining matches.

“Tingnan na lang namin kung saan kami abutin. Iwasan na lang namin yung makalaban yung may twice-to-beat advantage,” said Tanquingcen. “Malayo kasi pinanggalingan namin.”

Ginebra limits Meralco to its lowest output this conf which is also the lowest output for any of Kings' opponents this conf.
