Before the start of last season, charismatic Ginebra point guard Jayjay Helterbrand contemplated retirement after a lackluster campaign. Reports went around that Helterbrand was ready to call it quits, but eventually the one-time MVP appeared on the Philippine Basketball Association’s TV partner AKTV announcing that he will definitely play another season for the Gin Kings.
While his numbers last season were way below his MVP stats, Helterbrand continued his effort in trying to improve on whatever strong aspects remain in his 35-year-old body.
“I did a lot of praying and through hard work and strengthening, I am able to play and so retirement is something that is behind me now,” said Helterbrand “I’m ready to try to do an Olsen Racela and play until I’m 40, God willing.”
Last season, Helterbrand averaged seven points, five rebounds and just below three assists in nearly 25 minutes per game in 34 outings.
ROLE PLAYER. Helterbrand said he is ready to embrace a role that fits his current ability as a veteran player.
“I haven’t played to my ability for about two conferences due to injuries. I know that if I’m healthy I’m going to help the team,” said Helterbrand “I know I’m not going to have a role like I had before and that’s okay with me because I just want to help the team anyway I can to make a couple of more runs at the championship.”
Helterbrand scored eight points and issued few but vital assists in their 103-77 win over San Mig Coffee (formerly B-MEG) Wednesday at the Xavier Gym in Ortigas.
“Right now, I’m healthy and I think I can contribute with my leadership. Whatever time that my coach gives me, I’m just gonna go out there and give the best I can and help the team and back up LA (Tenorio) and Mike (Cortez) to the best of my ability,” said Helterbrand.
