MANILA, Philippines — Ginebra superstar Mark Caguioa will seek a second opinion from a specialist in the United States regarding the condition of his right eye socket which sustained a fracture last March.
Though he played consistently the whole of the previous of the conference that helped him win the Most Valuable Player (MVP) plum, Caguioa just want to make sure everything is fine with his eye socket as he vowed to win a championship for his team in the coming season.
“We’ll just ask what needs to be done,” said the 32-year-old Caguioa, who left for the US last week with his longtime girlfriend Lauren Hudson for a short vacation.
If it requires an operation then he might extend his vacation in Los Angeles.
It was during a playoff game with B-Meg in the Commissioner’s Cup where Caguioa sustained the injury.
That happened when Caguioa tried to cut through the defense of the Llamados, but in the process got entangled with B-Meg’s Rafi Reavis, and before falling on the floor James Yap accidentally hit his right eye with the back of his wrist.
The impact was so strong that it broke Caguiao’s orbital bone socket.
That injury caused Caguioa to have double visions for nearly two months. He also missed the semifinal round of the second conference where the Kings lost to the Llamados, the eventual champion as they toppled Talk ’N Text in seven games.
Though he did not play in the semis of the Commissioner’s Cup, Caguioa bagged the Best Player of the Conference (BPC). The injury healed naturally through medication, which allowed him to return to rejoin the Kings in the Governors’ Cup.
With the 38th Season of the PBA tentatively set Sept. 30, Caguioa plans to return either by the second or third week of next month, although he mentioned that he will do his part to condition himself physically for the long, tough grind of the PBA campaign.
“I feel good about my body right now, my knees are doing fine, but I know that I need to run faster so I’ve got to work on my legs, as well as my stamina,” said Caguioa. “Our focus is to win a championship, medyo matagal na din ‘yung last.”
“Winning a championship has always been my goal, this MVP, is just a bonus. Of course, I’m proud of the MVP, but my thing is always winning a title. Kung mananalo kami, lahat sa team magiging masaya,” added Caguioa.
Meanwhile, the PBA Commissioners office and its Board of Governors, as well as the MVP Sports Foundation will give P1 million cash donation each for the flood victims. The players and coaches of the PBA have collected as of presstime P150,000, which will be added to the PBA fund.
