Caguioa, Maliksi lead Ginebra to easy win over Air 21



Mark Caguioa provided the inspiration. Comebacking Allein Maliksi unraveled the devastation.

The Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings coasted to an easy 103-85 triumph over the Air 21 Express in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday night at the newly-refurbished SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Playing with fashionable eye glasses to protect the broken orbital bone socket on his right eye, Caguioa performed like he was in tip-top condition. He finished with 15 points on 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, 3-of-6 from the two-point region and made a perfect 3-for-3 from the stripe.

Caguioa’s return was highly anticipated by the rest of the Gin Kings as well as their legions of fans.

“It’s a blessing nabigyan siya ng clearance to play. Mark has been the heart and soul of this team and he’s a focal point of our team’s offense,” said Barangay Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen. “Of course, hindi mo pa rin pwede biglain.”

Caguioa and Maliksi, who himself was returning from a knee injury, combined forces in the fourth period. Caguioa scored five straight points while Maliksi had back-to-back triples as Barangay Ginebra posted an 89-69 lead inside six minutes in the fourth period.

A 12-2 run by the Express cut the Gin Kings’ lead down to 10, 91-81, but a quick 5-0 response from Ginebra, capped by a triple from Mike Cortez, brought the curtains down on the rallying Air 21 side.

Ginebra import Cedric Bozeman finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.
