Barangay Ginebra King KG Canaleta totaled three 50-point dunks on route to becoming the PBA All-Star Weekend dunk contest champion for a fifth time, Sunday in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte
Needing a perfect score to best former teammate JC Intal, Canaleta leaped over
three men, with the one closest to the rim being 6'9" Meralco Bolt Asi Taulava, to clinch the dunk title anew. On his previous dunk, he had jumped over one person, but saw fit to up the ante with the win on the line.
Intal for his part, first tallied a 49 on a sideways half-windmill dunk, and then a 50 on a 360 reverse one-hander, for a total score of 99.
Joining Canaleta and Intal in the final round of the competition was Rain or Shine Elasto Painter Gabe Norwood. His first dunk, a reverse behind the back dunk off a
bounce garnered him a 45, while his second might have been under-appreciated, a two-handed pump dunk off a pass to the rear of the backboard, which got him just a 48.
It was a shame for Norwood, who notched a perfect 100 in the five-man elimination round, courtesy of a reverse pump dunk and an off the glass self-alley-oop.
Intal and Canaleta both scored 90 in the first round to make it a three-man game.
Shaking off an ankle injury, Intal went barefoot on his first attempt for a 44, but he made up for it on the second go, catching a perfect pass from Josh Urbiztondo in the stands for a 46.
Canaleta tallied a 50 on the first dunk, with a self-bounce pass that led to a
one-hander off one leg. His second go was less impressive though, as he missed two windmill attempts before settling for a semi-hesitation, finesse reverse, which got a 40 from the judges.
Air21 Express' Elmer Espiritu struggled on his two attempts, needing multiple
tries before completing a 360 clutch dunk and a big leap. He finished
with a final score of 76.
"Spider-man" Arwind Santos just missed the cut with an 88, courtesy of a baseline 360 with a hang-on-the-rim flourish, followed by a baseline reverse coupled with a
one-handed hang that led to him landing with a web-shooters-at-the-ready pose.
Canaleta had previously won the contest in 2010, 2007, 2006, and 2005. - Adrian Dy, GMA News
