After the blockbuster deal involving Kerby Raymundo was approved by the PBA, coach Tim Cone was quoted:
being traded by Purefoods in 1999 after playing 12 seasons for the
team. He is the Jerry Codiñera of this generation in terms of being
that guy who always had to play second fiddle despite having the tools
to be the main man.
But what’s difference?
Luckily, for Raymundo, he is only 31 years old (Codiñera was
approaching 33 when he was traded to Mobiline). This is not a case of a
team giving up on a star just because he’s gotten old. Raymundo is
young enough to make impact—even lead his new team. Codiñera, on the
other hand, was well past his prime when he was traded.
Raymundo was unusually impressive during his comeback last year.
After suffering through injuries and spending more than a year
recuperating, the Kid can still perform as though he never got hurt.
More good news for Raymundo: he will be put in a great situation. He
will be surrounded by backcourt and swingman firepower in Ginebra. This
team just needs someone who can post-up and score high percentage
shots, and they’ve found that in Raymundo. Moreover, Ginebra always
plays in a home-court setting.
All these factors considered, my predictions are: for Ginebra to win
one title before the season ends, and for Raymundo to win next season’s
MVP.
It’s not a Jerry Codiñera story after all.

“Kerby leaving is almost like when Alvin retired. End of an era for Purefoods/B-MEG.”For me, Kerby’s case is more comparable to that of Jerry Codiñera
being traded by Purefoods in 1999 after playing 12 seasons for the

that guy who always had to play second fiddle despite having the tools
to be the main man.
