Alaska's Thoss admits facing giant task against Ginebra's 'Twin Towers'
Alaska's veteran center Sonny Thoss knows there's a lot of work to do in preparing and playing against Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar (left) and Greg Slaughter. Jerome Ascano
AFTER towering over every Meralco player when Alaska seized the final playoff spot with a 94-91 win on Sunday, Sonny Thoss will have to cut giants Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar down to size when the Aces meet Barangay Ginebra in the quarterfinals of the PBA Philippine Cup.
“It’s gonna be a lot of work there,” the 6-7 1/2 Thoss admitted. “We’ll see where we can take advantage of them.”
The 32-year-old Thoss, who had 21 points on top of seven boards, three assists, one block, and one steal against the Bolts, is definitely more experienced — with over nine years of PBA experience under his belt — compared to the 6-foot-11 Slaughter and the 6-foot-9 Aguilar.
But he knows his experience won’t be enough compared to what the 25-year-old Slaughter and the 26-year-old Aguilar can bring to the table.
“These guys are jumping over the rim every time and you gotta try to find ways to bring them out of the court,” Thoss said. “Once they’re inside the paint, they clog up the paint.”
And Thoss is hoping for all the help he can get, especially from 6-foot-9 Sam Eman, the Davao native who provided quality minutes in the Bolts’ game.
Whatever happens, Thoss promised to bring his A-game to help the Aces live for another day.
“You don’t need much to motivate you. You just gotta come out, do your job, and leave it all on the line.”
