Lowhorn stays focused as confusion reigns on his first day at Ginebra
"Whatever coach we’d have, we just have to get it done to get till October, get to the Finals and whatever else is going on, we have to put that aside because we have a short conference,” says Ginebra import Dior Lowhorn. aseanbasketballleague.com
CONFUSION greeted import Dior Lowhorn on his first day of practice with Barangay Ginebra as head coach Alfrancis Chua announced before the team that he was stepping down.
Lowhorn admitted he was clueless on what was going on, but vowed to focus on the task at hand, which is to help the Gin Kings win the season-ending Governors Cup title.
“I just came here the first day (Monday) and I don’t know much about that. I heard the coach was good,” Lowhorn told Spin.ph after the Gin Kings’ second day of practice at the Xavier School gym in San Juan on Tuesday.
“But whatever coach we’d have, we just have to get it done to get till October, get to the Finals and whatever else is going on, we have to put that aside because we have a short conference,” he added.
Lowhorn suited up for the Saigon Heat in the recent Asean Basketball League season, averaging 26.7 points and close to nine rebounds before hurting his knee on April 17. He then returned to the United States to recover, before finally signing up with the pro league’s most popular ball club.
The soft-spoken Lowhorn said he’s ready to sacrifice his offense for the good of the team, adding he’s happy to be part of a legitimate championship contender.
“This is the first time I’ll play on a good team with good players because at Vietnam, I didn’t have very good teammates, so I’ve been scoring in college and in Vietnam, but here, I’d rather just sacrifice,” he said.
“I just want to win and get back to the finals and re-right what was supposed to be right, because they were supposed to be champions but they got swept.”
Lowhorn said he’s actually had no idea what kind of team Ginebra was until some of his Filipino teammates in Saigon told him about the Gin Kings.
“I didn’t know much about the team honestly because it’s my first year in Asia, but my Filipino teammates in Saigon told me about the team,” shared the former University of San Francisco standout.
“When I finally became (the) official (import), my Facebook account just went crazy. I was surprised because I never experienced that ever so it’s really an honor to play for the team,” he added.
