GINEBRA CLIMBS OUT OF CELLAR

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel led from start to finish in turning back San Mig Coffee, 96-88, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup before a big Sunday crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The win was only the Kings’ second in seven starts, but enough to move them out of the cellar, half a game ahead of GlobalPort.

Mark Caguioa had 25 points to lead Ginebra, which still enjoyed a 15-point spread at 79-64 with 5:31 remaining.

But San Mig Coffee just wouldn’t roll over and die. A barrage of threes from James Yap and Joe Devance got the Mixers to within 85-90, time down to 27.1 ticks.

LA Tenorio, who logged 12 points and 13 assists, then doused cold water on the San Mig rally, hitting four free throws that put the game on ice.

Denzel Bowles finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds for the Mixers, who dropped to 3-4 in a tie with Barako Bull at 6th.
