After Jawo, who's next?

After Jawo, who's next? Jaworski+with+samboy

July 8, 2012
was a good day for Philippine basketball.

For one the retirement ceremony
stopped all rumors of a Robert Jaworski
comeback. While I was only kidding about this statement, part of me wishes him
to invent a time machine, go to his era, send for his fellow pioneers, and
teach the Fil-Ams of this generation on the proper way to interact with the
fans.

Okay perhaps I’m going
overboard with this statement but check this out – the guys then are doing what
the guys now are doing but for some reason, the guys now aren’t getting the
love of the guys then.

With that said, Robert Jaworski was shown the love he
deserves by the league and the fans and I believe this is a special moment. I
also liked that the succeeding game following the Jaworski ceremony turned out
to be a Robert Jaworski basketball clinic. Arwind
Santos and Enrico Villanueva
had to be restrained, bodies were colliding
and hitting the floor, and a nice Cedric
Bozeman
save guaranteed a Mark
Caguioa
MVP game and thwarted an Alex
Cabagnot
spoiler.

This is more than a Jaworski
retirement article. Ginebra has been in the league since 1979 and through the
years has produced a lot of big time names. These names were instrumental to
the growth of the erstwhile La Tondena
franchise and just like The Living
Legend
, I wish someone will save their number for no one’s use when they
retire.

Now I have lined up seven
people who are important enough to retire with the honor of having their jersey
commemorated forever.
Game starts now.

After these guys, I can see the
Kings retiring the numbers used by Noli
Locsin, Jayvee Gayoso, Vince Hizon, Dante Gonzalgo, Rudy Distrito, Romulo
Mamaril, Pido Jarencio, and Rudy Hatfield
.

Hopefully this will convince
people. Come to think of it except for Jaworski and Caidic, Ginebra hasn’t
retired any numbers yet. At one point the 41 jersey was used by Migs Noble, and then the other jerseys
were used by the imports.

Did you see how touched Jawo
was during the ceremony, there are a lot of players that wants what Jawo had. I
guess since the franchises are commercial and do not own arenas… this is one of
the reasons that is hampering jersey retirements.

This is why just like how Eastwood has their Entertainment Hall of Fame walkway, Philippine basketball should
also have something of that caliber. MVP with all his money could house this
project which will benefit basketball fans in terms of fandom.
Game over.
