PBA: Caguioa waxes hot anew as Ginebra clobbers Barako

Mark Caguioa and import Cedric Bozeman combined for just under half of the Barangay Ginebra Kings' production, as they overcame a slow start to beat the Barako Bull Energy 102-91 and book a spot in the semifinal round of the 2012 PBA Governors' Cup, Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Ginebra found themselves struggling early, going down 8-2 to Barako in the opening minutes of the first quarter, but the Kings eventually found their stroke from the outside, going on an 18-8 run to grab the lead, 20-16, which they later extended to 31-22, after 12 minutes.

In the second, Caguioa continued to spearhead the Ginebra offense, scoring three triples to help keep Barako at bay, as the Kings built on their lead to enter halftime with an 11-point advantage, 54-43.

The Barako looked determined to bounce back in the second half, as Mick Pennisi hit back-to-back three's in the third quarter to pull the Energy within seven, 66-59.

Willie Miller picked up where his teammate left off, scoring seven of his own to cut the deficit to two, 71-69. With one minute left in the third, Don Allado and Bozeman traded baskets, which allowed Ginebra to hold on to a three point lead, 74-71.

In the final period, the Energy finally overtook the Kings, as a Leroy Hickerson and one play, followed by a Doug Kramer inside hit, gave Barako Bull the advantage, 79-78. Ginebra responded with a Rico Villanueva slam and a Bozeman three to put the Kings on top once again, armed with a five-point cushion, 89-94.

Caguioa would then deliver the lethal blows, stringing five points together in the last two minutes to secure the win, 102-91.

"Diinan na 'to," said Ginebra head coach Siot Tanquincen. "Somehow we have to find away to play on a consistent level. We turned the ball over too much. First half pa lang 12 na agad.

"Sa ngayon, namumuhunan kami sa mga bata and they are committing those mistakes."

Bozeman led all players in scoring with 28 points on 12-of-18 shooting and missed a triple-double by a single rebound, finishing with nine boards and 10 assists.

Mark Caguioa added 22 markers, Enrico Vilanueva scored 11, while Willy Wilson and Kerby Raymundo chipped in nine points each.

The Energy got 21 points from import Leroy Hickerson, but he also had seven of his team's 15 turnovers.

"Dynamite" Danny Seigle produced 14 points and seven rebounds, while Willie Miller and Don Allado added 22 points and 11 rebounds put together.

Ginebra shot a blistering 10-of-23 clip from outside, good for 30 points, compared to just the 7-of-18 showing by the Barako Bull, which made up for the Kings' 17 turnovers and 23 turnover points given up.

The Kings wrap up the elimination round with a 5-4 record, enough for a semis berth, while Barako Bull slipped to 3-5, though they still have an outside shot at getting in. That does however make their Sunday gain versus the Meralco Bolts a must-win proposition for them. — ELR/AMD, GMA News
