Gin Kings may abandon triangle offense, says Cariaso

LOOKS like crowd darling Brgy. Ginebra may be abandoning the vaunted triangle offense, which head coach Jeffrey Cariaso tried to instill when he started to handle the team late last season.

While he understandably refuses to divulge any changes in their system, Cariaso admitted they tried different patterns during their tuneup game versus grand-slam team San Mig Super Coffee Saturday at the Ronac Art Center in San Juan City.

“Maybe not as much. Only because we’re working on other things. You have to understand, these guys they have strengths and weaknesses. I’m trying to implement something where they could play within their strength,” said Cariaso.

Against San Mig and the league’s main proponent of the triangle offense coach Tim Cone, Ginebra battled the Coffee Mixers to a neck-and-neck match which eventually ended with the score tied, 92-92.

Teams usually do not play extra period when they play tune-ups or exhibition games.

Cone, meantime, said it was hard to distinguish whether Ginebra was indeed trying to apply a new system or if they would still embrace the triangle.

“I think he has to build the team he feels will be most successful with his team. Whether it means running the triangle or running single high. I’m glad when people don’t run the triangle anymore because it makes it harder for others to adapt,” said Cone.

The triangle offense gave former Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson 11 NBA titles in handling those two teams, while Cone collected 18 PBA jewels using the system while handling the Alaska Aces and San Mig. Cariaso played and acted as an assistant coach under Cone.

Cone said the success of one team does not depend on a specific pattern but with the way coaches coach their teams.

“The magic is not in the system. The magic is in the teaching and the execution of the system. So the magic is really in the players who perform with that execution. There’s all kinds of different systems,” said Cone.

Meantime, in that same tune-up game Ginebra welcomed back guard LA Tenorio and high-flying forward Japeth Aguilar, who both had extensive time with the National team that competed in the FIBA World Cup and Asian Games the last two months.

“They came in this week actually lifting the spirits of the guys. We still got to work with them a little bit more, but these guys are natural basketball players. They know how to play and find a way to do the right things,” said Cariaso.
