'All-around' Powell a great fit for Ginebra

MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra coach Ato Agustin lauded new import Josh Powell after the former Los Angeles Laker helped the Gin Kings beat the Meralco Bolts, 88-78, in his PBA Commissioners Cup debut Wednesday night.

Powell, who replaced Leon Rodgers, put up modest numbers – 16 points, 15 rebounds – but it was his ability to fit in with the rest of the team that most pleased Agustin.

Aside from Powell, five other Ginebra players scored in double-digits, with Chris Ellis also scoring 16 points and coming up big in the final quarter to help hold off Meralco.

“All-around si Powell, at mas involved ang locals namin sa kanya,” explained Agustin. “Kay Leon, dahil scorer (siya), nanonood lang ang locals namin.”

Indeed, Ellis outshone Powell in the game, as the high-flying forward scored 14 of his 16 points in the final quarter, including the last 10 Ginebra points.

“Pinu-push niyua talaga ‘yung mga kasama niya,” Agustin said of their new import.

The win allowed Ginebra to break a losing skid and hike their record to 3-4, putting them in a tie with the Bolts.

Meralco was led by import Darnell Jackson, who had 25 points and 18 rebounds. Gary David was the highest scoring local with 18 points.
