Ginebra coaches, players credit Juno Sauler for improved offensive system

La Salle coach Juno Sauler, who led the Green Archers to the UAAP title last season, was back at the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel bench in their opening match in the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday night at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

A longtime assistant coach for the Gin Kings, Sauler was seen drawing up plays for the team in the endgame of their overtime victory over Barako Bull.

Ginebra executive Robert Non confirmed that management has allowed Sauler to take a more active role for the Gin Kings.

“Sabi ko nga sa kanya ilabas niya yung mga natututunan niya kung kani-kanino,” said Sauler, who has a wealth of experience having served as an assistant for Jong Uichico and Siot Tanquingcen in the PBA and Franz Pumaren and Gee Abanilla in the UAAP.

“Medyo matagal na rin naman siya sa amin, 12 years na.”

Ginebra coach Ato Agustin said the new setup was by design.

“Yung preparation naman ng gameplan namin, one page lang kami, so doon pa lang sa preparation alam na namin yung mangyayari,” said Agustin, who added that Sauler was brought in to finetune the Ginebra offense.

“Although lahat naman ng coaches nagtutulong-tulong, yung mga ideas to change all yung mga ginagawa namin last conference.

“Nag-iba yung mga plays, yung mga plays ni Coach Juno. We’re adjusting to the new system.”

Immediate impact

Already, the new offense architected by Sauler has drawn raves from players.

“Did you guys see our new system? It’s nice,” said Chris Ellis, who scored 17 points.

“We’ve got a lot of fluidity, a lot of ball movement. With our offense now, it emphasizes all our strength.

Ellis said the new dynamic offense allows Ginebra to be more dangerous.

“In the past, we had a lot of stagnant plays where people will just be standing. Now, we have a lot of movement off the ball. It’s something all of us have been wanting. Now we have the pieces and the right guidance, so we’re gonna get better.”

Ginebra center Greg Slaughter added that the team is working on its execution of a more complex system.

“We’re trying to become more disciplined in our system now. We’re having more movement. Last conference, we played more of a pick-and-roll,” said Slaughter.

“We’re getting used to it and I believe it will make us a better team.”

so thats d reason bakit parang magulo offensive plays ng ginebra..binago lhat kya nannibago dn mga players..hopefully pg nkabisado nla sna lumabas na maganda system nla..disciplined,fluent at hndi predictable

paiba iba ng sistema so maghihintay uli tayo na maiayos nila. tapos pag ok na o may kulang uli mag papalit ng coach wlang mangyayari sa team pag ganyan. si coach al ok na ung sistema nya sana kaso mukhang ayaw na nya mag coach

naku matatagalan pa ata bago makuha ang system na yan. ........ sana pati un rotation ng players, maayos na rin ...... masyadong babad si japeth sa upuan eh ....... hahhahaha

hindi muna ako aasa na papasok sila ng finals pero panonoorin ko pa rin ang mga laro nila ........... haahahaha

saka na un panonood ng live games kapag may nakita ng improvement sa coaching staff at players ....... specially kay japeth at LA..... coach ato o juno ....... hahaahha

^ayoko rin muna umasa lalo nat magulo pa sistema sa ginebra, hindi mo alam kung anong identity ng team, sigurado hindi defensive team kasi sakit sa bangs ng depensa nila tas run n gun? tsssss. olats nga tayo sa fastbreakpts kontra SMB..
