Ato Agustin named new Ginebra coach as Chua moves up to team manager

ATO Agustin is set to be named the new head coach of Barangay Ginebra for the PBA Governors Cup while former coach Alfrancis Chua is set to move up to team manager.

Agustin assumes the coaching reins just three weeks after joining the Ginebra organization from Petron, where he won a maiden league championship before being replaced by Olsen Racela at the start of the 2012-13 season.

Team insiders explained that Agustin got the nod since the former league MVP had the most head-coaching experience from among the Ginebra staff left after Chua's surprise resignation last month.

“Siya ang may experience sa coaching pool. Kaya siya ang nilagay,” said the source.

The other members of the Ginebra staff are Boycie Zamar, Art dela Cruz, George Gallent, and Freddie Abuda. Allan Caidic and Juno Sauler are also expected to rejoin the staff after La Salle's season in the UAAP.

On the other hand, Chua, who was prevailed upon to file a leave of absence instead of a resignation after Noli Eala was removed from his post as San Miguel Corp.'s consultant for basketball operations, is set to stay on, after all, although in a different capacity.

The decisions were announced by before the players in the presence of SMC boss Ramon S. Ang on Thursday afternoon at the company’s office in Ortigas.

Agustin will begin his coaching reign, on an interim basis, at the team’s practice on Friday morning at the Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong.

Heeding a clamor from players and coaches, Ginebra is set to name Chua the new team manager replacing Robert Non, the current team governor who held the post briefly in a concurrent capacity.

“Nakiusap talaga kami sa management na sana huwag alisin si coach Al totally sa set-up,” said a player who asked not to be named.

“We want his presence in the team. He has been an inspiration to us and how he motivates the team will always be missed,” he added.

Another player told Spin.ph that even members of the management were one with players in asking that Chua stays on, even in a different capacity.

good news to! di lang pala si Eala ang nawala pati na din yang jinx na yan! mas maganda na ang future ng ginebra ngayon at sigurado di na mashado magkakaron ng trading players palage sa ginebra.. good job RSA!

good news to! di lang pala si Eala ang nawala pati na din yang jinx na yan! mas maganda na ang future ng ginebra ngayon at sigurado di na mashado magkakaron ng trading players palage sa ginebra.. good job RSA!

tsk tsk,,kung ako pipili mas gusto ko si Pido na lang mag coach sa Ginebra,,pero andyan na yan so suportahan nalang si coach Ato & dalin nya sa tagumpay ang Ginebra kung hindi..alams na..,,hehey!!

yan naman ang tama kasi maganda na ang naging run ng ginebra last confy why not ipagpatuloy diba? malay mo umabot ulet tayo sa finals at magchampion sigurado ako mareretain ka ng coach ng ginebra pag nangyari yun.. medyo pressured din yang si coach ato kasi isipin mo si coach al first time ulet ng coach for how many years nagawa nyang ipasok ang ginebra sa finals kagad.. goodluck coach Ato

Atleast natanggal na saten ang mga bwisit (Eala & Non) mas magiging maganda na ang future ng ginebra ngayon dahil sigurado ako bibihira nang pumasok sa trades ang ginebra ngayon
