Defiant Caguioa says defense holds key as Ginebra aims for improbable comeback

STANDING on the brink of a stunning sweep in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals, Mark Caguioa could only think of one thing to keep Barangay Ginebra's fading hopes alive in the best-of-five title series.

Get back to playing defense.

“Ang kailangan bantayan namin is our defense,” said the Kings’ acknowledged leader in the face of a commanding 2-0 Alaska lead over Ginebra in their championship showdown.

“The last couple of games bago kami dumating sa championship, it’s because of our defense. But now as a unit, we need to get back to the stuff that we did defensively.”

The Kings went down again in Game Two, 104-90, and have now lost the first two games of the series by an average of 15.5 points.

They also allowed six players to finish in double figures on Friday led by import Robert Dozier with 16 points.

But Caguioa is of the belief that the Kings will just have to regroup and improve on their defense collectively to have a shot at an improbable comeback.

"Of course, kaya pa namin ito. I know parang longshot coming from 0-2, but hey, nothing’s impossible,” said Caguioa, who surprisingly played 19 minutes in Game Two and contributed two points and two assists.

The reigning league MVP said as long as there is a game to play, he vows the Kings won’t simply go down without a fight.

“If there’s still a game, kaya pa namin ito. We’ll fight.”

Yes, we won't simply go down without a fight...it is doable, we have done it a couple of times (against ROS and TNT) in this conference and in the past; we are at our best when our backs are against the wall - the walls are made of bricks but our hearts are made of steel...IT IS DOABLE, don't forget it...NSD Gins!!!!
