Barangay Ginebra San Miguel import Vernon Macklin has been a star in the NCAA in the United States, a draft pick for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA, and a stalwart in the NBA D-League.
But when the best-of-five championship series of the Commissioner’s Cup between Ginebra and Alaska tips off on Wednesday, Macklin will be playing in the first high-level finals match of his basketball career.
Macklin has been a savior for Ginebra this conference, leading the Gin Kings’ rebound from a 0-4 start in the tournament to reach the title round as the No. 7 seed.
For the import known for his energy and hustle, the support of the Barangay faithful has been the fuel for his play.
“I love these fans and we also love doing things for the fans,” Macklin told InterAKTV shortly after the team clinched its finals ticket with a Game Five semifinals victory over Talk ‘N Text in front of 21,480 fans.
Ginebra’s playoff games have been blockbuster affairs, and the finals are expected to be the same, which is why Macklin is inspired heading into the series.
“It feels great that everybody’s cheering for us.”
