Abueva gets 'fistbump' of approval from Caguioa

ANILA, Philippines – Alaska rookie Calvin Abueva’s intensity and passion for the game earned him Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel superstar Mark Caguioa’s "fistbump" of approval.

Caguioa, who stormed to the league in 2001 with a “devil-may-care” swagger, sees a lot of himself in his younger years in the Aces’ rookie sensation.

“Nakikita ko ang sarili ko nung nagsisimula pa lang ako sa PBA kay Calvin [Abueva],” Caguioa told Philstar.com after their team practice last Wednesday. “Walang pakialam [sa sasabihin ng mga tao]. Laro lang ng laro.”

Abueva recently drew the ire of San Mig Coffee superstar James Yap for his rugged defense in their semifinal series that is currently tied at one game apiece. But Abueva, who possesses the same “no fear” swag like Caguioa, is unfazed of the challenge to shut down Yap, a two-time league MVP.

Caguioa, though, distanced himself from the “word war” between Abueva and Yap in the aftermath of their heated Game 2 where the San Mig Coffee superstar accused the Alaska rookie of too much flopping and playing dirty including hitting him on his injured back. But Caguioa, the reigning league MVP, likes the idea of having Abueva as a teammate.

“Ang mga gaya ni Calvin ang masarap na kakampi. Nagpapakamatay para manalo,” Caguioa said.
