People’s champion Ginebra begins semis series versus powerhouse Talk ‘N Text

Talk ‘N Text and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel begin their best-of-five semifinal series in the 2013 PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Tropang Texters and the Kings meet at 6:45 p.m. in Game One.

The Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text swept Petron Blaze in their best-of-three quarterfinal series while Ginebra won two straight against No. 2 seed Rain or Shine in their own showdown.

“Nobody can think na makakapasok kami sa semis. Credit to the players,” said Gin Kings coach Alfrancis Chua.

“This is already an accomplishment for the players.”

Import Vernon Macklin and LA Tenorio have been consistent for Ginebra since Mark Caguioa was sidelined by an injury while Jayjay Helterbrand and Kerby Raymundo found their old form in the quarterfinals.

It’s been a bumpy ride for Talk ‘N Text in the tournament, but the Tropang Texters were able to find ways to get their rhythm just in time for the playoffs.

Coach Norman Black said Ginebra will always be a tough opponent especially in a series.

“We recognize Ginebra as a dangerous opponent. With their solid play and the crowd support we expect them to be a tough one,” said Black.

“For us major concerns will be our defensive rebounds and keeping (Jerome) Jordan out of foul trouble.”
