Divine intervention keyed Ginebra’s entry into semis, believes Jayjay Helterbrand

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel guard Jayjay Helterbrand is a man of faith, and he believes his team’s entry into the semifinals of the Commissioner’s Cup was a gift from above.

“It sounds corny, but me and my teammates pray a lot. We even did Bible study together and we always pray before and after the game or practice,” Helterbrand told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview.

Helterbrand was a key in his team’s quarterfinals upset over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Ginebra won twice over the Elasto Painters, with Helterbrand showing flashes of his old deadly form to average 11 points in the series.

“God gave me the strength in my knees just to get my game back. Now, my confidence is really back and I feel good. All these things that happened to us — the two wins, my two best games of the tournament and the ball falling on our lap — were like a miracle. I would say divine intervention played a key role for us,” he said.

Ginebra stumbled to open the tournament, which Helterbrand believes was a trial for the squad.

“We were tested by God when we went 0-4. We won our next few games, then Mark (Caguioa) and Billy (Mamaril) got hurt. But we stayed together, we prayed together and that helped us through,” said Helterbrand.
