There seems to be no stopping the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel juggernaut.
The Kings came up with big plays in the dying seconds to nip Meralco, 91-90, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday thriller at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
It was the sixth straight win for Ginebra, which climbed to third spot in a tie with Petron Blaze at 7-5.
With Mac Baracael on the firing end, the Kings enjoyed an 89-81 lead with 2:26 remaining in the game. But the Bolts just wouldn’t give up. Ronjay Buenafe hit successive three-pointers to fuel a final uprising capped by another Sunday Salvacion triple that gave Meralco the upperhand at 90-89, time down to 12.9 seconds.
Vernon Macklin, who led Ginebra with 31 points and 12 rebounds, then drove strong to the hoop for the marginal basket, setting the final count with 7.9 seconds to go.
The Bolts had a chance to win with one final offensive in the last 1.2 seconds but Eric Dawson missed at the buzzer, sending Meralco down to 6-6, tied for fifth with San Mig Coffe and Talk n Text.
