Speed is main weapon as Ginebra aims to mirror run-and-gun game, success of Jawo teams Tenorio83

EXPECT more running and gunning from Barangay Ginebra starting this PBA Commissioner’s Cup behind the free-wheeling offense initiated by new coach Alfrancis Chua.

Point guard LA Tenorio holds high hopes for the free-flowing offense that had a mildly successful road test during a pocket tournament in Cebu over the weekend, expecting the Kings to be as fast and as successful as Robert Jaworski's Ginebra teams of the eighties.

The Gilas Pilipinas mainstay said the new system is expected to benefit the Kings’ big men, all of whom he said are capable of keeping pace with the team’s bevy of fleet-footed wingmen and playmakers.

“Mas marami talaga kaming takbuhan ngayong conference. Pati naman kasi mga big men namin gaya ni Kerby (Raymundo), Rudy Hatfield, Billy (Mamaril), saka Chris (Ellis) tumatakbo lahat sila,” Tenorio shared to Spin.ph as the Kings took a break on Wednesday.

“Speed ang magiging main weapon namin.”

Ginebra won one of three games during the recent four-team pocket tournament in Cebu, leaving the Kings just enough time to make the necessary adjustments before starting their campaign in the mid-season conference against Air21 Express on Sunday.

The 28-year-old guard out of Ateneo is hopeful the Kings will have a stronger run to the Finals this tournament considering they were one of the first teams to bring over their import in town.

Tenorio said the Cebu tournament proved beneficial for the crowd-drawing PBA ball club since the Kings were able to familiarize themselves with Chua’s system, and at the same time, got the feel of how it is to play with import Herbert Hill.

“Nakakatakbo naman kami sa Cebu. In fact, dikit `yung mga laro namin, panalo na actually kami sa Alaska, na-shoot lang ni Tony (Dela Cruz) `yung three points kaya nag-overtime,” recalled the 5-foot-8 guard, who was acquired by Ginebra from Alaska just before the 38th season started.

Tenorio said Hill has been doing well in practice and is slowly getting his conditioning back after a long layoff prior to his arrival in the country.

“Kailangan lang namin ayusin `yung offense namin. Tingin ko konting familiarity na lang sa system. Though may mga plays kami na pinapasok ni coach na galing pa kay coach Siot (Tanquingcen),” he added.

Ginebra placed sixth in the season-opening Philippine Cup, finishing with an 8-9 record overall after bowing to the Elasto Painters in the quarterfinals.
