Chua likes what he sees but jury still out on Hill

BARANGAY Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua has read all the posts about Herbert Hill, from his poor touch from the perimeter to his free-throw shooting which is said to be even worse.

Yet Chua insists he has yet to see anything in practice that could bolster those fears.

"He’s strong in the post, may perimeter shot, his free throws are decent, and he can run the floor," was the new Ginebra coach's assessment of the 6-10 center who was the Utah Jazz’s second-round pick in the 2007 NBA draft.

If there is one concern at this time, Chua said it should be Hill's lack of match fitness after being away from competitive ball for nine months after a stint with the Incheon Elephants in the Korean league.

"Mismo siya nagsabi na medyo out of shape pa siya tsaka siguro dahil sa change of weather,” Chua said. “Makikita naman natin yan eh. Day-to-day basis. But it seems that he’s decent kasi all over Asia na siya nakapaglaro.”

Ginebra Mark Caguioa said he is also heartened by what he has seen so far from the 28-year-old journeyman.

"So far okay naman siya. He looks like a hard worker, but it’s to early to tell,” said the reigning league MVP, adding the Kings have yet to play with the former Providence stalwart in a prolonged scrimmage.

“But he listens and any player who listens and willing to learn more will be alright.”

LA Tenorio, for his part, believes only time will tell if Hill has what it takes to take the league's most popular ballclub deep into the PBA Commissioner’s Cup playoffs.

“So far, so good. Medyo jetlag pa yan, but so far impressive naman ang pinapakita niya,” the veteran playmaker said. “Malaking tulong siya sa amin. Hindi pa namin nakikita yung shape niya. Pero buong week scrimmage kami to see if he can really help us this conference.”
