Just a season ago, Jayjay Helterbrand was contemplating retiring from the game, as he felt his 35-year-old body was betraying him.

“I thought of retirement early last season because of various injuries,” Helterbrand told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “But now, the injuries are gone and my game is slowly coming back.”

Now back in tip-top condition, the 2009 PBA Most Valuable Player awardee is looking forward to many more playing years.

“Retirement is far from my mind now. I will try to play until I’m 40 years old and do an Olsen Racela.”

Racela, the recently-appointed coach of the Petron Blaze Boosters, was star point guard of the old San Miguel Beer franchise before retiring in 2011 at the age of 40. He served as the elder statesman of the team off the bench in his latter years in the league, a role that Helterbrand wants to play for Ginebra.

“I will be turning 36 and I don’t think I will be used to playing 40 minutes per game just like I did four or five years ago,” said Helterbrand, adding that he is ready to take a backseat to LA Tenorio, whom the Gin Kings acquired in a blockbuster offseason trade.

“I’m so happy we will be having LA. It gives us a stronger chance. We were a game away from making the finals last conference. Make that one rebound away from reaching the championship round.”

Ginebra lost to the B-MEG Llamados in a knockout game for the second finals slot in the Governors’ Cup.

Helterbrand said he is focused on bringing back a title to Ginebra, which hasn’t won a title since 2008.

“That’s the only thing we have in mind right now,” said Helterbrand. “For me, I will stay in shape, get myself ready every game and contribute in any way I can.”

eto ang dahilan kng bakit tama ang pag kuha ng ginebra kay LA tenorio... madami nag sasabi paano bibigyan ng playing time ni coach siot sila LA, jayjay at cortez pero sa ngayon nasa isip ni jj eh makuha na nila ang championship kahit maging kapalit pa nito eh limited playing minutes, i think alam na ng lahat ng players ng ginebra kung ano ang role nila sa team, even si mark the spark after he won mvp award, i think mas focus na lang sya ngayon kung pano makuha ang championship kita naman din sa tune up nila na gumagawa sya ng plays kila ellis at maliksi..
