Jaworski not closing doors on politics

MANILA, Philippines – “Living legend” and former Senator Robert Jaworski takes pride on what he had done during his stint in the Philippine Senate.

He only wished he could have done more.

“Kung hindi lang po maraming mangkukulam [sa pulitika] eh siguro mas marami tayong nagawa,” Jaworski said.

The former Ginebra playing coach won a senatorial seat in the 1998 national elections but failed to get re-elected for a second tenure in 2004.

“Mabigat po ang aking karanasan sa pulitika… pero siguro po kung titignan ang trabaho natin doon, may kunswelo din po tayo, lalo na ‘yung mga bumoto sa akin,” said Jaworski, whose jersey No. 7 will be retired by Ginebra on July 8.

Among the legislation he authored were the Sports Benefits and Incentives Act, the Clean Air Act and the Solid Waste Management Act.

He was also the principal sponsor of the Senate bill creating the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame.

“‘Yung Athletes, Coaches Incentive Act, ‘yan po napakinabangan na, ‘yung mga nanalo na mga atleta natin, malaki-laki nang nakukuha nila. At saka po ‘yung National Hall of Fame Law, which created an opportunity to show that we have a lot of great sportsmen worth emulating,” Jaworski said.

Despite his frustrations, Jaworski said he is not closing the door on politics.

“Ang pinakamahirap sa tao ang nagsasalita ng tapos. Kasi po hindi natin alam ang bukas… I know what it needs to be a senator,” he said.
