Yap Caused Caguioa's Eye Injury

MANILA, Philippines — When Barangay Ginebra held its final practice session yesterday in preparation for its semifinals showdown with B-Meg, Mark Caguioa was there, not to practice but to show support to his teammates.

Caguioa was injured two weeks ago during a quarterfinals match and doctors have advised that he should not be allowed to play.

Caguioa also corrected earlier reports that the injury occurred when he fell to the floor when he got entangled with B-Meg’s Rafi Reavis during their March 11 game.

He said the injury was caused by B-Meg’s James Yap who accidentally hit his right eye with the back of his wrist, breaking the orbital bone socket.

“James didn’t know it, it was an accident. When it gets pushed back, the bones got fractured,” said Caguioa, who drove to the lane and he fell on the floor when his left leg got entangled with Reavis’ right foot.

“It’s been affecting my sinus, I can’t sneeze, I can’t cough. I’m taking antibiotics so I can’t get headaches or anything.”

“The double vision is going down a little bit… thought it was going stay there. But it was really a scary moment. It’s the worst week for me. This is probably more scary than the patella tendonitis operation I had,” said Caguioa, who averages 16.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists this conference.

His inability to contribute has, of course, saddened the Ginebra star guard who is in the running for the Player of the Conference Award. He said he wanted to play but the injury is deemed too serious to allow him to play basketball. —Waylon Galvez
