Caguioa's Eye To Be Examined

MANILA, Philippines — Barangay Ginebra guard Mark Caguioa will be examined this week for a suspected fracture of the orbit (eye socket), according to Kings coach Siot Tanquingcen.

Caguioa accidentally banged his head on the floor during the third quarter of their playoff game against B-Meg Friday night at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. He sustained two cuts on his right eyelid.

The 6-1 veteran guard drove to the basket against two B-Meg defenders, but lost his balance after his left foot got entangled with Rafi Reavis’ right foot.

Caguioa lay on the floor for about three minutes as PBA and Ginebra doctors tried to stop the bleeding. He was helped out of the court by assistant coach Allan Caidic and was later brought to the Cardinal Santos Hospital in San Juan.

“He’s having double-vision ‘til early morning (of Saturday) that’s why the cut was not stitched,” Tanquingcen said in a phone interview yesterday.

“He was advised by the doctor to come back Tuesday, because the swelling has to subside before he undergoes test. Because of the double-vision, it’s possible that there’s a broken bone (on the eye socket),” added Tanquingcen.

The eye socket is a bony cup that surrounds and protects the eye.

The rim of the socket is made of fairly thick bones, while the floor and nasal side of the socket is paper thin in many places. A fracture is a broken bone in the eye socket involving the rim, the floor or both.

Ginebra won the game over B-Meg, 93-84, to clinch the No. 2 slot and an outright semifinal slot. The Kings will have a week-long rest before returning to action, ample time for Caguioa to recover. (Waylon Galvez)

Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen said Caguioa will be examined by an eye doctor today to determine if surgery is necessary to repair the slight fracture in the lower orbital
socket under his right eye. PBA governor for Ginebra Robert Non confirmed today’s examination and said the initial finding of two of three ophthalmologists who previously checked the injury was no surgery may be necessary.
